The village of Brownton, population 850, is located in west-central Minnesota. It is approximately 75 miles west of Minneapolis on Highway 212. The primary industries in the area are dairying, farming (corn, soybeans, alfalfa, peas and sweet corn) and light manufacturing.

Brownton was founded in 1878 with the arrival of the railroad to the more westerly parts of McLeod County. Brownton received its name from Captain Alonzo Brown in honor of his brother, Charles, who died in the battle of Corinth, during the Civil War.
